The Dental Examination
Regular dental examinations at least twice a year are recommended by the American Dental Association for children and adults of all ages. Dr. Young can asses your specific needs, for some low risk patients, once a year will suffice. Others may need to be seen more frequently than just two times a year. Ask Dr. Young what is best for your needs.
Professional cleanings are encouraged to prevent or slow the process of gingivitis, dental decay, and periodontitis (gum disease). Because dental decay and periodontitis are the top causes of tooth loss, it is important to remember that proper oral hygiene must be kept up at home on a daily basis. This includes brushing your teeth twice a day, flossing, drinking plenty of water, and avoiding certain foods and drinks that may be harmful to your teeth. If you are diagnosed with gum disease, you may need to visit us more frequently for cleanings.
There are 2 types of dental cleanings depending on your specific needs.
Basic cleanings consist of lightly scraping the teeth above the gumtissue to remove calculus/tarter (hard calcified build up), polish and flossing.
Deep cleaning consists of numbing the gums, and scraping the teeth below the gum tissue. Periodontal Disease is one of the leading causes of tooth loss. If you have been diagnosed by a dentist as having Periodontal Disease, you should educate your self about Periodontal Disease, and have your teeth cleaned three or four times per year.
